This week, we're exploring three very different corners of France and Italy, with a welcome return from the foothills of the Pyrenees, a K&L-exclusive Nebbiolo from the heart of Barolo country, and a delightful discovery from one of Burgundy's lesser-known appellations. All three offer the kind of character, regional authenticity, and value that make exploring beyond the familiar so rewarding. First, the 2024 Anne de Joyeuse "VERY" Chardonnay Haute Valle de l'Aude is back after a swift sellout, and we're glad to have it again. From the limestone-rich foothills of the Pyrenees near Limoux, this charming Chardonnay strikes a lovely balance between the freshness of a Mâcon Burgundy and the generous fruit of California's Central Coast. Ripe peach, Golden Delicious apple, and a hint of tropical fruit mingle with toasted brioche and sweet spice, while a bright mineral thread keeps everything lively. With its inviting price and easygoing versatility, it's a terrific Chardonnay to have on hand for just about any occasion. Next, the 2024 Sotto Nebbia Langhe Nebbiolo (K&L Exclusive) is a K&L exclusive that brings a little taste of Barolo country to the table for under $20. Named for the autumn fog that settles over the Langhe hills during Nebbiolo's late harvest, this bottling comes from Monforte d'Alba, one of Barolo's most celebrated communes. Grown on the region's distinctive sandstone-laced marl soils, the wine spends twelve months in wood followed by three months in bottle before release, an unusually patient approach for Langhe Nebbiolo. The result is an authentic expression of its origins, offering a glimpse of serious Piedmont pedigree at a remarkably approachable price. . Finally, the 2023 Domaine Benoît Cantin Irancy "La Grande Côte" is the sort of red Burgundy that makes you wish you were sitting in a little Parisian bistro with steak frites on the way. Just south of Chablis, the tiny appellation of Irancy produces wonderfully characterful Pinot Noir from the same limestone-rich geology that defines its famous neighbor. Benoît Cantin's La Grande Côte comes from a steep, sun-drenched slope overlooking the Yonne River, yielding one of his most expressive and structured wines. Fresh wild berries, violets, and a lovely chalky minerality make this an especially appealing discovery, and at under $30, it's a reminder that Burgundy still has a few delightful bargains tucked away.
