From the buyer
The Coudoulet has often been referred to as “Baby Beaucastel,” and for good reason. The vineyards sit just outside the boundaries of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but if we were talking about this wine a century ago, before the appellation lines were officially drawn, these vines would have contributed to the classic Beaucastel Chateauneuf. That has always made what seems like a humble Côtes-du-Rhône all the more special.
Just recently, I poured the Coudoulet alongside Beaucastel for our sales teams when I was visiting each of the California store locations, and it was a great comparison. It has all that sumptuous fruit you would expect from such a great terroir—roasted raspberry, blackberry, potpourri, fig jam and a touch of dried tobacco. In its youth, it shows some of the character you might have to wait several years to unlock from its bigger brother.
That doesn’t make Coudoulet simply a lesser version of Beaucastel. This is a wine that stands firmly on its own and comes from one of the great producers of the Southern Rhône.
And there is one more consideration: we have this at the sharpest price I’ve seen in many years. For this level of pedigree and quality, Coudoulet doesn’t feel like such a “Baby” anymore, making this a particularly compelling offer right now.

Critic reviews
92 pts · Decanter · September 2023 Dark in colour. Soft, juicy, velvety tannins. An approachable and well-balanced vintage of Coudoulet that should age well thanks to its tannic finesse, acidity and freshness. Though it is quite a tannic vintage, so give it some time. (MW)
92 pts · James Suckling · January 2025 A focused, lively and succulent Cotes-du-Rhone with aromas of cherries, raspberries, dried herbs and baking spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Seductive and precise, with crunchy red berry flavors at the center. A focused finish with length. Drink or hold. (KD)
91 pts · Wine Advocate · September 2024 A blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 10% Cinsault, the 2022 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel exhales a delicate, perfumed bouquet of black cherries, spices, violets and spring flowers. It’s medium to full-bodied, enveloping and layered with a juicy core of fruit, a tense mid-palate and a fresh, ethereal finish. This is a consistent wine and a solid value. (YC) 91+
91 pts · Vinous · November 2024 Ripe raspberry, pressed violets, licorice and dried herbs compose the multifaceted aromatic profile of the 2022 Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel. Shaped gently by soft tannins, this refined red contains solid substance and caps off with persistence on the classic finish. Give it another two years to start revealing its full potential. (NG)
90 pts · Jeb Dunnuck · October 2024 Spicy herbs, ground pepper, leather, and spicy red and black fruits define the 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel, a medium-bodied, elegant, complex red that should age nicely for 8-10 years, if not longer. I certainly see no need to delay gratification, though.
Drink Rhone · October 2023 Deep robe; the nose has a cracked pepper, snappy tone, is set around cassis and blackberry fruit, a hint of iron clarity. The palate is spiced, coolly fruited, lines up blueberry fruit with a note of pine, holds smoky tannins, the length good, well assured. It’s very much behind the starting gate, which is a good sign, meaning it will take time to form its character, and will carry some intrigue in the future. Its restraint and iron content are a success in this hot, dry year. From 2026, decant it. *4.5 Stars*
