There's no denying that this has been a tough year for our neighbors. An extended shutdown, cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the continued rise in the cost of basic necessities have all put extra strain on communities.

But when things get hard, the Feeding America community swings into action. Here are three ways you've helped feed change this year:

#1 Stepped up for neighbors while the government was shut down

When the federal government was shut down for 43 days, the impacts were felt by neighbors across the country. Delayed SNAP distributions and interrupted paychecks meant many neighbors found themselves in need of a little extra help.

Thanks to tens of thousands of individual donors giving what they could, millions of families—some facing food insecurity for the first time—were able to stay nourished through the unexpected.

#2 Rescued billions of pounds of food

Every year, the U.S. produces 92 billion pounds of surplus food. But through partnerships across the country with local growers and food manufacturers, we're able to rescue billions of pounds of food that would otherwise go to waste.

It's thanks to supporters like you that we're able to turn excess into access so everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

#3 Raised our voices for a hunger-free America

We advocate for the policies that help end hunger, like protecting funding for SNAP. With your help, we were able to take nearly 400,000 actions and counting this year, making this one of the largest movements to end hunger in America.

These initiatives—distributing food during a government shutdown, rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, and raising our voices to end hunger in America—are only possible because of Feeding America community members like you. Thank you.

With gratitude,
