What if securing extra food for neighbors experiencing hunger was as easy as texting a friend? With MealConnect, it is. MealConnect is Feeding America's food donation platform. Grocers, restaurants and other food suppliers post a photo of their surplus food, and food banks and partners come pick it up to distribute it to families facing hunger. Share@MealConnect uses AI to scan the photos, catalogue the pictured foods and then match donations with food banks. It's technology for good! And last year it won the SXSW Innovation Award, taking home the top honor in the Community Empowerment category. But more than cool tech, MealConnect is about rescuing good food and making sure it gets to neighbors. And we're doing that, too: Last year, 137 food banks used MealConnect to help provide a staggering 1.2 BILLION meals!
Chef Robert knows firsthand how simple, and helpful, the program is. He's the executive chef at East County Transitional Living Center (ECTLC), partner of Feeding San Diego, a Feeding America network member. "I get an alert on my cell phone and then once I approve the donation, we send our refrigerated van out right away," he said. "With MealConnect, we're able to provide fresh produce…It's food we normally wouldn't get."
