| I keep thinking about Frederick, a retired Marine in New York, focused on his kids. "The only dream I have is seeing my children become the most they can be," he says. "That's what it's all about." But rising costs of groceries and other essentials make it difficult for Frederick to provide for his family. "Things have tripled in price," he said, "I'm not talking about steak or shrimp—just hot dogs and milk. Milk used to be $1.25; now it's $5.50. When you add up those numbers, something gets missed."
Since 2019, the cost of groceries has jumped 32%. For a family already stretching every dollar, that isn't just a statistic—it's an emergency. Nearly 48 million people in the U.S. are in the same position as Frederick, grappling with how to make ends meet. That is the highest number we've seen in more than a decade.
For Frederick, getting support "provide[s] something invaluable," he said, "it allows you to put clothes on your back or transfer funds to cover something else. It's the difference between being warm and being full, or cold and hungry. Places like this allow you to avoid those impossible choices." Despite the challenges, Frederick remains focused on the positives. "Like we say in the Marines, 'Adjust, adapt and overcome.' ... It's about providing security for my family and giving my children the best chance to succeed. That's what makes me hopeful."
There are stories like Frederick's—neighbors who are working to provide for their families, have dreams of the future—in every county, parish and borough in the U.S. You can help your neighbors with a gift today. Donate $25 now >>
