I vote in every election because thousands of people who came before me put their lives on the line for my right to vote. I am an educator, and I see how policies impact my students. It’s harder for them to pay for school, they worry about friends and loved ones being threatened by ICE, and they feel less hopeful about their job opportunities. I recently spoke with a teacher in Texas whose classroom is under surveillance; cameras film him daily. This is the norm in the state as the government works to censor history and books. He wants to move back to New York, and even though he loves Texas, the conditions of teaching have become too difficult. The teachers of Texas don’t deserve this, and neither do the children. Gina Hinojosa and James Talarico are Texas candidates I’m excited about because, while I don’t teach in Texas, I believe every student in our country deserves a quality education. These candidates will fight for that, and I’m proud to support leaders who believe our schools should empower students, not limit what they can learn. We are all more free when everyone is educated. I vote to protect that freedom for everyone.
