We're less than a month from the midterms, and it's harder than ever to look at the news right now (if you can even call it news).
The way people in power are talking about this election is unsettling. So was what was said about California. My home. The place I was born and where I’ve built my life. It felt like being told we're expendable.
Here's what I believe: nobody is collateral damage. Not Angelenos and San Diegans. Not Black and brown athletes. Not trans kids who want to play. Not the women and girls who were told this game wasn't theirs. Everyone deserves respect. Always.
The threats feel louder and louder. Some days I read the news and I feel my chest get tight before I've even had coffee. Most of the time, my instinct is to shrink my world down to avoid global, political chatter. To walk Bob. To lead RE meetings. To make dinner with Tobin. To enjoy this little life with all its miracles and beauty. To focus on what's in front of me and let the rest fade out.
But I learned something in meditation a long time ago, and lately I keep coming back to it. There’s a technique where you start by focusing completely on a candle. Just the flame. Nothing else exists. Then, slowly, you let the room back in. The edges of the table. The sound outside the window. The temperature of the air. You don't lose the candle. You just stop pretending it's the only thing there.
That's the practice I need right now. The candle is my day-to-day life. The people I love. The work I care about. The room is everything else. The scary stuff. The stuff I'd rather not look at.
I don't think the answer is to stare only at the candle. And I don't think it's to let the room swallow me whole either. It's to hold both. To stay present in my own life while staying aware of the world around it. To do the work without losing myself in it.
For me, that starts with a plan. Whenever I get bogged down by the despair that's being engineered by people in power, I remind myself that the only way forward is through. Fear loses its grip when I move. So here's my Vote Plan. Steal it if it helps!

Over the next few weeks, RE will be sharing more voting resources and we're also hosting a workshop with Roots to Revolution (Members, keep your eye on RE—space for more info!).
The goal is simple. We want our community to protect their peace and keep doing the work. We need you for both! Find your candle. Slowly let the room in. Then, go vote.
With hope in our hearts and on the horizon, we fight for our future by voting for it 🖤
