2018 Anderson Family Vineyard Dundee Hills Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $56) ($19.95) "A ripe, opulent vintage across the Willamette Valley, this Pinot from high in the Dundee Hills expresses those bolder fruit elements while still clinging to the elegance of the site.” -Decanter ![]() This small-production, hand-crafted Pinot Noir is from one of Oregon’s most distinctive single vineyards. While Anderson Family Vineyard may not be a household name, it’s a site held in high regard by many top Willamette Valley producers, including Antica Terra, Patricia Green, Bergström, and J.K. Carriere. The vineyard was planted in 1992—against the advice of many who thought it too steep and too rocky to succeed. Perched on a high knoll in the northeast corner of the Dundee Hills, it sits atop an ancient lava flow, forming a rugged hillside of fractured basalt. Even after more than 30 years, the vines continue to struggle in the free-draining, rocky soils, yielding limited fruit of remarkable character and concentration. Organically farmed and dry-farmed, the fruit is vinified with minimal intervention: native yeasts, natural malolactic fermentation, and long, slow aging in French oak. I was seriously impressed by this wine, having only tasted a couple of examples from this vineyard before. This is serious Oregon Pinot Noir with a true sense of place and depth of flavor. The 2018 vintage is drinking beautifully now, after over five years of quiet bottle aging. It’s perfectly integrated, balanced, and expressive. Expect dense, ripe, briary red fruits and baking spice, complemented by hints of leather and truffle—early signs of graceful bottle age. Silky in texture and full of earthy undertones beneath the spiced berry fruit, it’s a wine of real charm and complexity. My wife and I enjoyed it with a quick late-night cheese plate, and it absolutely over-delivered for the price. Cheers! -Ryan Woodhouse, K&L Domestic Wine Buyer ![]() 2018 Anderson Family Vineyard Dundee Hills Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $56) $19.95 93 points Decanter: "In a ripe, opulent vintage across the Willamette Valley, this Pinot from high in the Dundee Hills expresses those bolder fruit elements while still clinging to the elegance of the site. Fruit drives the aromatics as red raspberry and ripe strawberries mingle with crushed stone and a touch of leather. The palate rounds out with red and black berries ripe in the August sun, sumac notes, black tea, and a finish with tingly spices led by white pepper." K&L Notes: From one of the highest, steepest and rockiest vineyards sites in all of the Dundee Hills. Anderson Family Vineyard is a small estate planted on a unique fractured basalt flow at the top of the famed Dundee Hills. Planted in 1992, these mature vines are farmed organically and every element of the process done by hand. The wines are made in the small winery perched amongst the vines. Everything done using only gravity. Small lot native fermentations and, long slow aging in the underground cave dug into the steep hillside. Truly boutique, hand-crafted, estate-grown Pinot Noir. |
