2019 Roederer "L'Ermitage" Anderson Valley Brut Sparkling Wine ($79.95) "If sunshine could be bottled it would be this." — Wine Enthusiast, 100 Points ![]() Forty years after first planting vineyards in Northern California’s Anderson Valley, famed Champagne house Louis Roederer has achieved a remarkable feat: the first-ever 100-point score for a U.S. sparkling wine from Wine Enthusiast! Roederer Estate’s prestigious “L’Ermitage” bottling—its tête de cuvée—is the American counterpart to France’s legendary Cristal. Winemaker Arnaud Weyrich has been with Roederer since 1993, holding roles both in Champagne and California. After a stint as Chief Technical Officer at Champagne Louis Roederer in Reims, Arnaud moved with his family in 2002 to take the helm of Roederer Estate in Anderson Valley, where he continues to oversee operations. For L’Ermitage, Arnaud selects only his favorite parcels from dozens of blocks across seven distinct estate vineyards. Just 5% of the base wine is barrel fermented, and the wine spends over five years aging on the lees before disgorgement. The 2019 vintage is suave and sophisticated, with stunning purity of fruit, crystalline elegance, and a fine, silky bead on the palate. A blend of 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir, it also includes 5% reserve wine. The dosage is just 6g/L—the lowest ever for L’Ermitage—allowing the wine’s natural texture and depth to shine without added weight. It’s a brilliant, vibrant sparkling wine that will evolve beautifully over the next 5–10 years. -Ryan Woodhouse, K&L Domestic Wine Buyer ![]() 2019 Roederer "L'Ermitage" Anderson Valley Brut Sparkling Wine ($79.95) 100 points Wine Enthusiast: "If sunshine could be bottled it would be this. Aromas of fresh succulent stone fruit, a hint of yeast, citrus blossoms and notes of quince on the nose. The mousse is creamy and light with baked red apples, blood orange zest, white grapefruit, sticky caramel and layered salinity with a mouthwatering finish. It will bring a smile to your lips. *Cellar Selection* (TP)" (09/2025) 96 points Vinous: "A young, potent wine, the 2019 Brut L'Ermitage is shaping up to be the greatest wine ever made at Roederer Estate. The aromatics are beguiling, but the 2019 is going to need a number of years to settle down. Readers will have to be patient. The 2019 is seriously impressive, but it needs time. It is the only wine in this series that was vinified with full malolactic fermentation and has the most lots fermented in wood here. It also saw the lowest dosage ever here, at 6 grams per liter. These choices look to be a winning approach for the future. Superb. Disgorged: February 2024. (AG)" (06/2025) |
