First, the 2021 Mount Langi Ghiran "Cliff Edge" Shiraz Grampians Victoria is a terrific example of why cool-climate Australian Shiraz deserves more attention. From a granite-soiled Grampians site with vines planted as far back as 1870, it channels a distinctly savory, Northern Rhône-like character with lift, structure, and a lean, precise finish that keeps you coming back for another sip. It’s the kind of bottle that wildly overdelivers without fuss or fanfare. From the same estate, the 2021 Mount Langi Ghiran "Cliff Edge" Riesling Grampians Victoria also punches above its weight, with Decanter calling it “impressive and quite serious for the price.” Next, Samuel Louis Smith continues to turn out some of the most exciting under-the-radar Chardonnay in California, and the 98-point 2024 Samuel Louis Smith "Les Granitiers" Monterey County Chardonnay absolutely delivers. Native-yeast-fermented and raised mostly in neutral barrel with a touch of stainless steel, it hits that beautifully focused, high-toned style that feels more Burgundian than Californian. It’s brilliant now, but don’t hesitate to forget a few bottles in the cellar for the next decade. Also new from Smith is the 97-point 2024 Samuel Louis Smith "Baytree Lane Vineyard" Sonoma Valley Gamay Noir, which Jeb Dunnuck aptly calls “delightfully quaffable.” Finally, the 99-point 2022 Croix de Labrie, St-Emilion is the kind of modern Right Bank overachiever that draws you in from the first pour. Sourced from a tiny four-hectare estate planted mostly to Merlot on limestone soils, it has earned near-universal praise for its purity, precision, freshness, and impeccable sense of balance. Available on pre-arrival, the 97-point 2023 Croix de Labrie "Stella Solare" Bordeaux Blanc comes from 80-year-old vines and looks poised to be another standout from this tiny but mighty estate.
