This particular barrel was distilled entirely in 1984 and finished for an additional 36 months in fresh port pipes before bottling at a natural vatted strength of 40% alc by vol in 2017. Tasting notes from the bottler, "33-year old rum finished for 3 years in a Port Pipe from one of Oporto’s best wineries. Dark mahogany color with flashes of deep brass to the edges and serious viscosity showing in the glass. The multi-layered nose shows great dark cherry juice with hints of cranberry puree and huckleberry jam over honey-nut cheerios and candied apricots. On the palate, there is an explosion of interesting dark fruit like acai berries crushed with maraschino cherries and then apple cobbler, marzipan and toasted macadamia nuts. It is a stunning and super interesting Rum with such a fabulous and complex finish, that just lingers for minutes afterwards."
This expression from the wonderful line of old Colombian rums by Distinctive Spirits is a stupendous value, but also offers a uniquely contrasting character compared to the other three vintages. The most youthful of the group remains impressively concentrated and complex, yet carries an added layer of pungent fruit and lifted aromatics. Lets give it a try. The color is a deep reddish auburn (1.4). The fruit-forward profile is complemented by a touch of funky rum depth, a welcome and compelling feature here. The port influence still shows with sweet red fruit on the nose, but theres also a pronounced orchard fruit character alongside earthy herbs and spice. On the palate, dried fruits and fondant are balanced by a juicy vibrancy that gives the whole package incredible lift and invites another sip. While this may be slightly less dense and dark in flavor than the others, it certainly does not lack complexity. Taken together, the four expressions represent an incredible range of character built around this remarkable old spirit, which may never again be available at this price, or at all.
This incredible rum was finished for over 36 months in fresh Port pipes and botted at a natural vatted strength of 45% alc by vol in 2017. Tasting notes from the bottler, "Deep almost ebony-colored liquid in the glass with very high viscosity and beautiful bronzed edges to the rim. The dark fruit from the Port cask it was finished in for 3 years are shining through here with elderberry molasses, black cherry compote and huckleberry sauce. It is a magical transformation of an already superb rum that has now been interjected with this Port character. Further on the nose, honey, creamy caramel, and almond butter come out to play, showing significant complexity in this already 38-year-old rum. The palate is powerful with deep berry character over maple syrup, dry extract, and vanilla compound, yet again this long lingering and always developing sensation, that just makes for an incredible tasting experience."
These four vintages of old Colombian rum may be the most interesting find we have seen in some time. Even if you are a serious rum fanatic chasing ultra high-ester Jamaican funk, these releases should be raising eyebrows. It is simply unusual to find rum of this age without added sugar or color, bottled from single casks at full strength, albeit naturally tempered by decades in the warehouse, and offered at such a low price. If you want a point of comparison, you could spend $1,400 on the likely sugared 1979 Two Masters from Dictador, or you could drink this monster for a fraction of the price. The color, like the others in the range, is very dark, here a deep auburn (1.4). The nose, no doubt shaped by the port pipe aging, offers a dramatic departure from the rest with a dense layer of sticky red and black fruit - cherry sauce, blackberry jam, figs, and glaçage miroir. The palate follows with roasted nuts, salted caramel, and vanilla, building richness without becoming cloying. Another stupendous and distinctive expression from this remarkable lineup of old rums.
This particular barrel was vatted entirely from the '77 vintage and finished for 3 years in first fill ex-bourbon barrels. It was bottled in 2017 at a naturally vatted cask strength of 44% alc by vol. Tasting notes from the bottler, "...gorgeously charred mahogany-colored rum. On the nose, there is all that maple, vanilla and crushed honeyed almond character so sought after in the greatest Bourbons, yet here it acts as an overlay to the sweet maple syrup and toffee notes with light touches of oak in the background. It hits the palate like a freight train laden with rich almost oily viscous character of Bourbon power, showing again vanilla extract, spirits of rum, roasted caramelized and buttered coffee crumble, yet retains a lovely balance. It finishes in the same suave wat that it starts with definite vanilla pudding and again touches of oak."
The beauty of these four vintages of old Colombian rum that we are currently featuring is that each offers a completely distinct expression of these rare stocks. It remains unclear how our friends at Distinctive Spirits, alongside the legendary Massimo Righi of Italy’s Silver Seal and Whisky Antique, were able to acquire such remarkable parcels. Even more unusual is that the stocks appear to have been bottled, dumped, and then re-bottled. Considering the beautiful packaging that now adorns each vintage, it is hard to complain about the extra effort, but the fact that we can offer these ultra rare old rums at such an indescribably low price is simply stunning. Let’s turn to the 1977 vintage, finished in ex-bourbon barrels before bottling. The color is a beautiful red-tinged mahogany (1.5). The nose is a stunning display of purity and depth, offering sweet caramelized sugar, dense exotic fruit, and toasted Tahitian vanilla. Beneath the initial sweetness lies a deeper, more classic rum character, with subtle ester-driven funk, ginger spice, medium roast coffee bean, and a range of exotic spices. The palate again shows surprising freshness, not weighed down by the sugar additions so common in old Spanish-style rum, and still full of life. A lifted vanilla note drives through the mid-palate, joined by tropical fruit, oolong tea, and layers of caramel. The finish is soft and understated, yet gently sticky, lingering with quiet persistence. A slightly more naked and transparent expression of this ultra aged, rare old rum.
This particular barrel was filled into sherry butt and left to mature for an additional three years and bottled at a vatted cask strength. Distilled entirely in 1976 and bottled in 2017. Tasting notes from the bottler, "Sporting an ultra deep mahogany color with a bright bronze to the edge, this viscous liquid just looks splendid in the glass. At just over 41 years of age, it explodes with maple syrup, roast toffee and toasted macadamia nuts on the nose. It hits the palate with a panoply of flavors, not least the characteristic salty caramel and the walnut concentrate of the finishing, which was 3 years in a refill Oloroso Sherry cask from a top producer in Jerez. Then there’s mocha, chocolate liqueur and an incredible balance where the sugar cane plays with the alcohol without any astringency. The finish is massive and rich, with incredible unctuousness, smooth and lingering for minutes on end with hints of creamy rum raisin ice cream and toffee nuts."
The fact that these rums are even available is simply ridiculous. If you know anything about rum, you might be aware that the Colombian rum industry is one of the most opaque and underappreciated in the world. It is controlled by regional government monopolies that restrict sales and production and generally make life very complicated for producers. There is really only one brand that regularly makes it out of Colombia, Dictador, and they have bottled similarly old rums at five to ten times the price our friends at Distinctive Spirits are asking. Add to that the collaborative effort of the famous Silver Seal, one of Italy's finest bottlers, with a 30-year reputation for selecting some of the very best rums and whiskies in the world. Then, consider that this is actual single cask rum, albeit likely consolidated over the decades, bottled without adulteration or coloring, and you have one of the most exciting rum brands we have seen in ages. I would have been absolutely stoked to sell this for $450 or more, but instead we are able to offer this once in a lifetime ultra aged rum at a fraction of that price. It is truly a special moment. Let's have a taste. The color is dark, owing to many decades of tropical aging. The nose is absolutely stunning, not just a simple expression of old extracted wood, but something deeper and more complete, revealing the depth of the original spirit and the beautiful layers of sherry on top. Even though it was likely distilled on columns, there is definitely some pot still character here, adding extra depth. The vibrant aromas of roasted nuts, sweet chocolate fudge, and earthy exotic woods and barks are intoxicating. On the palate, it is surprisingly fresh, with a good deal of structure but none of the hard tannins or astringency you might expect. It asks nothing of you but long, slow attention. Distilled in the same year K&L was founded, and every bit as storied and special as we are. |
