DI Grower Champagne Hugely Overdelivers
Michel Arnould "Acuité" Grand Cru
Extra Brut Champagne
($44.99)

"I cannot overstate just how good the balance is of this wine—
it is impossible to get tired of and reminds me of tête de cuvée!"
— Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer

Anyone who loves Champagne should try this exceptional bottling! The Acuité from Michel Arnould is a great example of top grower Champagne at a wonderful, accessible price. The seamless blend of two of the top Grand Cru villages in the region (Verzenay and Mesnil no less!) gives us beautiful hazelnut and baguette toast as well as super clean minerality and lively acidity. While this is labeled as an Extra Brut, the wine is balanced like Brut and comes across as dry without being austere. I cannot overstate just how good the balance is of this wine—it is impossible to get tired of and reminds me of tête de cuvée!

K&L Notes: This Champagne used to be called "Grande Cuvée" and is composed of 70% Pinot Noir from Verzenay and 30% Chardonnay from Mesnil, 80% fermented in stainless steel and 20% in old oak. The Champagne has a graceful, delicate balance that Verzenay wines sometimes lack but with the signature hazelnut Pinot core. I found it to have creaminess to complement its racy cherry fruit on the palate and an extraordinarily long, dry finish with the chalky minerality that only a little Mesnil can bring.

This has such a really inviting nose, there's some soft very freshly baked brioche, but just the crumb and then some white flowers, crisp apple, quince, and lemon zest. The palate is incredibly round and inviting, with a good level of acidity but definitely an easy drinking style of Champagne. This has such a long and pretty lemony finish on it, it really just makes me want to have this with nothing in particular for the most part, this pairs super well with just the glass, but if forced some passed appetizers or a baked oyster or two would certainly not go amiss. Absolutely delicious.
