2018 Department 66 "Others" Cotes Catalanes (Previously $25) ($13.99) "Don’t miss this one—it’s Phinney at his best, in a bottle that drinks far above its now-accessible price.”— Keith Mabry, K&L French Regional Wine Buyer ![]() I have visited the Maury wine region many times over the years, with its distinctive black and brown schist soils. Walking through these vineyards feels almost otherworldly—the terroir is rugged and unyielding. The vines here produce some of the deepest, most powerful reds in all of Roussillon. It’s no surprise that Dave Phinney, acclaimed creator of Orin Swift and its once-signature wine The Prisoner, sources fruit from this very terroir for his bold, evocative red. When Phinney sold The Prisoner brand years ago, part of the proceeds helped finance this passion project. True to Phinney’s dynamic winemaking style, what emerges in the bottle has an almost otherworldly intensity. The nose is deep and compelling, with notes of strawberry confiture, brambly blackberry, and layers of fig paste intertwined with dried blueberry. Old World nuances of smoky minerality and dried tobacco add complexity to the fruit-driven core. This is a serious wine, fully living up to the Phinney legacy and style. Originally released at a more serious price point, we jumped at the chance when the importer offered to move through a backlog of this previous vintage. They asked if we wanted to take a position—we said: how about all of it? We are thrilled to offer this sumptuous, full-bodied red as the perfect companion for summer grilling. Ribs, grilled sausage, charred vegetables? Absolutely. Don’t miss this one—it’s Phinney at his best, in a bottle that drinks far above its now-accessible price. -Keith Mabry, K&L French Regional Wine Buyer ![]() 2018 Department 66 "Others" Cotes Catalanes (Previously $25) $13.99 94 points Decanter: "Brooding aromas of wet slate, tomato confit and boysenberry, along with lofty-turned earth notes and a pop of red leaf tea. Expansive on entry, with grainy tannins framing a plethora of red, black and blue-toned fruits, tinged with star anise, chocolate, black rum cake and a cedar-kissed finish. Balanced, expressive and layered. Tremendous value. While the D66 flagship label would be Grenache-focused, Dave Phinney and Richard Case had to figure out what to do with the other Syrah, Carignan, and Petite Sirah grapes that they have planted on their property. This Others is the answer. Leading with 65% Grenache, the rest is Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Lledoner Pelut. (JC)" (12/2022)
This intensely lush grenache-heavy blend is a robust powerhouse of black fruit and woody spice. The seductive compote on the palate and smooth, well-integrated tannins provide an excellent complement to smoked meats. This rich, dark beauty is drinking well right now and offered at an exceptionally great price. Try it before it's gone! K&L Notes: Dave Phinney, acclaimed for creating the renowned Prisoner wine, embarked on a new venture that led him to the rugged vineyards of Maury in the region known as Department 66. Nestled in French Catalunya near the Spanish border and under the shadow of the Pyrenees, this unique terroir captivated Phinney with its old-vine Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan—thriving within the broader IGP “Côtes Catalanes” surrounding Roussillon. With his trademark vision for innovation, Phinney now oversees 300 acres of vines, many over 60 years old, rooted in soils rich in black schist, granite, and limestone. By blending traditional viticulture with forward-thinking winemaking, Phinney is redefining the narrative for wines emerging from this extraordinary landscape. The Others is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan (with occasional additions of Lledoner Pelut). Aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak and further refined with five months of bottle aging before release, it’s an intense yet approachable wine that’s drinking beautifully now. Expect notes of preserved strawberries, earthy minerality, and nuanced herbal tones. Full-bodied with supple tannins and a smooth, lingering finish, this is a standout expression of the region's potential. ![]() |
