Polished Power from St-Émilion’s Rising Star
2020 Bellefont-Belcier, St-Émilion (Elsewhere $70) ($54.99)
"The purity of fruit here is just about off the charts.”

2020 Bellefont-Belcier, St-Émilion (Elsewhere $70)

It's a joy to see Bellefont-Belcier in the hands of the team responsible for elevating Tour Saint-Christophe into one of the region's great buys in just a few short years. It's equally exciting to imagine them taking this gem to the next level in the same way—and they might have done just that with the 2020 vintage. Leading with fine, engaging aromas lined with plum and bright florals, the wine immediately shows a noteworthy sense of refinement that speaks beautifully to the masterful touch at this estate.

On the palate, there's a clear depth of red-to-black fruit, fine tannins, and a long, impressive finish. The 2020 shows the grace and character that this property can exhibit in top vintages, but the level of depth here is something else entirely. It will be all too easy to pull corks early, and it's well worth checking in on now, but this is a wine that will continue to evolve and gain complexity over the next few decades with ease. A singular value in modern Bordeaux, this is a bottle that deserves a place in any cellar—especially while it's still available at this kind of pricing.

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The finest wine I've tasted from this estate, the 2020 Château Bellefont-Belcier is an incredibly gorgeous blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby/purple-hued, it offers a great nose of cassis, ripe black cherries, camphor, dried flowers, cedar, and forest floor. Bringing gorgeous richness, it nevertheless stays flawlessly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins and a great finish. The purity of fruit here is just about off the charts." (03/2023)

97 points James Suckling: "Fascinating aromas of plums, peaches, lavender, violets, and other flowers. Hints of fresh herbs, too. So complex. Full-bodied yet so elegant and polished with a curated and focused palate. Hints of chocolate at the end. Its so subtle and complex. Weightless on the palate." (01/2023)

This phenomenal release from Bellefont-Belcier has a super fragrant red-fruited nose with lavender, licorice and light cedar spice. On the palate, seamless ripe boysenberry, dark cherry, elegant tannins and anise. A real winner that is surprisingly drinkable right off the bat. It will age beautifully, of course. This one is on my not-to-miss list and my highest rated Bordeaux of the past few weeks.
