This pineapple is a little too round. That watermelon looks bruised. This carrot is a weird shape.
These are silly reasons to not eat fresh produce—but the reality is that's all it takes for food to go uneaten. Every year, BILLIONS of pounds of good, nutritious food are left uneaten, never purchased, or simply unpicked.
Rescuing good food and giving it a second chance is a critical way that the Feeding America network of food banks gets quality meals to neighbors who need them. As the nation's largest food rescue organization, we work hand in hand with food manufacturers, grocery stores, farmers, and more to rescue food and redistribute it to food banks in communities across the country.
Last year, we were able to rescue 4 billion pounds of food that otherwise would have gone uneaten!
4 billion pounds of rescued food is a lot of food—but there's so much more out there! Guess how many meals still go uneaten each year >>
We're not talking about leftovers from dinner plates or that spinach you forgot in the back of the fridge. It's a bigger issue like fresh produce that's the "wrong" shape, surplus food that never gets picked up, and perfectly good food that just didn't sell.
Instead of letting this food go uneaten, we're putting it to good use, feeding our neighbors who don't have enough to eat. It's thanks to supporters like you that we're able to turn excess into access so everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Sincerely,
Linda Nageotte
