A Solera-Driven Meunier with Grand Cru Soul
Constantine "Solarris" Blanc de Noirs Brut Champagne (Elsewhere $60) ($29.99)
"I love the airy elegance and effortless charm the Constantine brings to the glass”
— Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer

Hailing from the village of Champlat—home to esteemed neighbors like Thierry Thibaut and Michel Dervin—this 100% Meunier Blanc de Noirs includes 50% solera reserves dating back to 2009. Delivering the toasty generosity and clean, crisp pear fruit you’d expect from top-tier Meunier, this exceptional wine offers the graceful drinkability more often associated with Chardonnay-based blends.

I love the airy elegance and effortless charm the Constantine brings to the glass—and I would have happily paid $60 for the experience. But at this price? I’m casing up!

We say a lot of things in the wine world—some have merit, and some don’t. One of my favorite sayings is, “Champagne is never wrong.” It has a twofold meaning: first, Champagne is an incredibly versatile wine when it comes to food pairing; second, any occasion is instantly elevated by its presence.

I decided to test that theory with a dinner of herby roasted leg of lamb, creamed spinach with corn, oven-roasted potatoes, and melted leeks. I was hoping it would work—and when I found out the Champagne was 100% Meunier, I felt pretty smug about my choice. The pairing was absolutely beautiful. There was enough acidity to handle the richness of the creamed spinach and cut through the fat and gaminess of the lamb. The Parmesan on the leeks with the wine? Sublime. The subtle notes of blood orange on the palate popped against the herb rub on the lamb. There were hints of brioche on the nose, but the wine remained mostly clean, with soft and pretty fruit—blood orange, pithy lemon, and a touch of citrus zest. Just perfect.

The palate was clean, delicious, and paired seamlessly with every single bite. Meunier has this savory note mid-palate, coupled with a slight pithiness, that makes it so approachable and food-friendly. This is a crazy delicious Champagne at an equally crazy low price—and it deserves all of your attention.

Composed of 100% Meunier grown in the clay and silt soils of La Neuville-aux-Larris in the Vallée de la Marne, this cuvée blends 50% from the current harvest with 50% from a solera dating back to 2009. Aged for a minimum of three years and finished with a dosage of 8 g/L, it’s best sipped slightly above fridge temperature to fully appreciate its complexity. A fine, soft bead lifts flavors of vanilla-scented pear tart, caramel glaze, and lightly toasted almonds, culminating in a saline, mineral-driven finish.
