Fallet-Dart "Clos du Mont" Brut Champagne (2006) ($69.99) "An incredible piece of affordable luxury...” — Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer Our longest-aged current release, this is a profound, majestic single-vineyard Champagne. This wine blew my mind with extraordinary brioche and white flower notes on the nose, subtle elegance on the palate, and a finish that lasts nearly all night. I’m convinced this is not only one of the best bottles at K&L, but also an incredible piece of affordable luxury at this price point. One of my top releases of the year! -Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer ![]()
K&L Notes: This single-walled vineyard is the top of the line from Fallet-Dart. Although not labeled as a vintage, it is 100% 2006 and composed of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir that is barrel fermented. It is aged for over 15 years on the lees before release. The word "tirage" in French, which appears on the back label, means "bottling", and this all 2006 champagne was bottled in fall of 2007 and has spent an incredible 15 plus years on the lees. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
Fallet Dart's single vineyard 'Clos du Mont' is a great example of a perfectly balanced, well-aged Champagne. Aromas and flavors of white jasmine, slices of yellow pears, soft apricots, bruised lemons, and marzipan. Barrel fermentation adds complexity, several years on lees gives it texture, and ample acidity maintains it's freshness.
There's Champagne that's aged a while on the lees and then there's the Fallet-Dart Clos Du Mont. This is all 2006 vintage, and was aged on the lees for over 15 years. The result is something complex, deep, and a little nutty on the finish. The nose is wide and round, with a back note of sourdough and then loads of lovely classic fruits buried underneath, golden apples and lemon with a little wisp of jasmine in the very back. The palate is similar, very citrus forward while there's some baked apples in the background along with all toasty lees and a little touch of honey on the finish. This is an incredibly structured and deep Champagne that I want to have with a roast chicken or a meatier fish with.
This is a lovely and elegant Champagne, and what a great deal given what's in the bottle! Fine bubbles, nutty, full of brioche, candied citrus and ginger, all with a spicy backbone due to the French oak used for fermentation. An amazing vineyard site and a ton of lees aging all go into making this a rich, complex, and delicious wine, perfect for appetizers! Simon Li | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 14, 2025 If you want something with real age and complexity, this is the one. A single-vineyard Champagne aged over 15 years on the lees and made with a good amount of Chardonnay, it pours deep gold and smells like baked pear, dried flowers, toasted nuts, and even a bit of spice. Its rich and layered, with caramelized apple and nutty, earthy tones coming through. But what makes it special is that its still freshtheres acidity, tension, and a kind of quiet power to it. |
