Incredible Pricing on Complex Mezcal
Extremely Rare K&L Exclusive Puntiagudo Mezcals

The Puntiagudo brand is quickly making a name for itself as one of the unsung heroes in the mezcal category. Its owner, César, is a passionate mezcal aficionado committed to enhancing the livelihoods of his distillery partners. However, he is also practical and recognizes the market is flooded with high-priced mezcals, only some of which warrant their cost. To introduce these special small batches from outstanding Oaxacan producers to the market, he offers them at highly competitive prices, even if it means taking a financial hit. These are must-try mezcals.

Another spectacular ancestral Puntiagudo! That is to say it's distilled in tiny 80-liter clay pots, crushed by hand and undiluted. Here, the wonderful Ruben Lopez in the tiny mountain town of Santa Catarina Albarradas used 19-year-old Sierra Negra agave to produce this miniature batch. This agave, known as Agave americana var. oaxacensis, is one of the slowest growing, massive agaves. Ornamental versions of this massive plant are found throughout California, but the plants in Albarradas grow to an enormous size, but the sugar levels are incredibly low. This tiny 60 liter batch used 770 kg (1700 lbs)that's almost 30 lbs of agave per liter of mezcal. Anyway, this stuff is crazy rare. Let's try it. A glistening crystal color. The nose is a huge mountain mineral bomb with some subtle vegetal characteristics that point toward tepextate. There's a savory saltiness on the nose too - almost like a cured ham or dry-aged steak, but this mingles among fresh herbs, dried citrus peels and a creamy, almost chocolate-like character. On the palate, it's very rich and creamy with this big mole note permeating the mid-palatechili and chocolate. It's by far the most robust of the four Puntiagudo exclusive batches we have with a hefty power and darker side, albeit still without the overt smoke. We're so lucky to have access to such high-quality mezcal for such an incredible price, and if you like the 5 Sentidos Albarradas Sierra Negras, this is a must-try.

This tiny batch from an extraordinary distiller in Miahuatlan is extremely scarce, with only 36 bottles available! A shimmering crystalline hue draws the eye. The near-perfect Karwinskii nose presents sharp mineral character entwined with vivacious citrus and subtle fresh grass notes. As it airs, hints of honeysuckle and papaya emerge, contrasting wonderfully with the building spice. On the palate, it's open and inviting. This mezcal shies away from smoke, instead highlighting pure lemon oil, tropical fruits, and subtle hints of mace and bay. The escalating spice towards the finish prevents it from becoming too pretty, but honestly, it's such a delight to drink. It offers an excellent foray into top-tier mezcal, but if you're anticipating a smoky heavyweight, it's absent here and truthfully, it doesn't belong in the upper echelons of mezcal. This magnificent spirit is a true bargain, especially when compared to similarly high-quality batches from other regional bottlers. Its quality far outweighs its price, making it a must-have in any mezcal enthusiast's collection.

Another top-tier ancestral mezcal from the young master in Minas. There's no question to me the Rolando will be part of the pantheon of great Minas distillers in the future, but right now he's clearly out to prove something. This beautiful expression of clay pot distilled mezcal is so distinctive and delicious it must be tasted to be understood. I'll try to do it justice. Crystal clear with a subtle hint of smoky vibrancy. The nose is the perfect balance of sweet and savory offering gorgeous Tobala fruit peaches and pomegranate absolutely at war with a savory almost black olive character. It could be Clairin on first nosing, but with air the depth and rich agave spice builds. On the palate it absolutely envelopes the senses a huge oily mouthfeel - with the subtle savory note providing a central structure with which the rest of this complex spirit drapes across the palate. It's full of sacred herbs, sweet candied fruit, dense earthy spice and a creamy texture. This is a beautiful expression that I'm simply feeling very lucky and honored to have been able to select for the shop. Fewer than 40 bottles available here. Don't sleep on it.

It's astounding that we're acquiring this exceedingly rare mezcal at such a price. Coyota from Minas, known for its rarity, uniqueness, and high cost, is seldom seen. The last one spotted was Real Minero, trading at over double this price. Even in Miahuatlan, where this plant (usually labelled Coyote) is more common, it's a rare sight. Rolando Angeles, despite his youth, is a genuine Master, and every batch he crafts is noteworthy. This one, however, is on another level. The appearance is crystal clear with a subtle oily viscosity. The nose is an absolute whirlwind of tropical fruits - mango, papaya, guava, and passion fruit. It's intensely floral, though not overwhelmingly perfumed, featuring sweet roses and orange blossom. Behind this tropical riot, there are notes of mandarin peel, candied lime, dill, tarragon, and fresh sandalwood. On the palate, the exotic wood flavor intensifies slightly, while the vibrancy of the tropical flavors eases, giving way to a lively mid-palate and a protracted, herbaceous finish. The complexity and tension are extraordinary, evolving in the glass for hours. This is top-notch mezcal, pushing the boundaries to the maximum.
