93-Point Atlas Peak Cabernet by Chappellet's Winemaker
2021 Acumen "Mountainside" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $80)
(Now $29.95)
I've long been a huge fan of the Acumen wines, so when the chance came up to get my hands on a parcel of the 2021 Mountainside Cabernet for a fantastic price, I didn't hesitate! This wine is largely from Acumen's two estate vineyards on Atlas Peak - Attelas Vineyard and Edcora Vineyards. Attelas was planted in 1992 by Dr. Jan Krupp, three years before he planted the better known, and much larger Stagecoach Vineyard next door. Edcora is a vineyard parcel even higher (1,600-1,700 ft) up Atlas Peak. Both vineyards have extremely rocky volcanic soils that force the vines to produce small amounts of deeply concentrated fruit. The vineyards are farmed by esteemed viticulturist Mike Wolf and his protege Domenick Bianco. The wines are made by none other than Phillip Corallo-Titus, known for his iconic wines from Chappellet Estate on Pritchard Hill just a stone's throw away from Acumen's own vines, sharing much of the same mountainside, volcanic terroir. This is big, powerful, structured Cabernet with lashings of blackcurrant, plum, mulberry, graphite, crushed rock, wild thyme, dry chaparral, and hints of toasty barrel spice. Full-bodied, powerful and brooding. Hints of cedar emerge with air, a touch of leather too. Nice rich, dark fruit, with serious mountain concentration. This most definitely does not feel or taste like you're drinking a $30 bottle of wine! Our price is phenomenal given the quality and decade plus of ageing potential. Once the word gets out this will be snapped up fast.

($29.95)
A powerful, rich, mountain-grown Cabernet largely from vineyards on Atlas Peak above 1000ft elevation. Here the vines struggle in very rocky volcanic soils. Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus (Chappellet) uses his decades of know how to craft a concentrated, bold wine, but with beautiful polish and refinement.

Int'l Wine Review:
"The 2021 Mountainside Cabernet Sauvignon instantly begins to impress as it releases aromas of ripe black cherries and black currants along with wild herbs, graphite, spices, tobacco, licorice and crushed stones that all soar from the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied, balanced and structured with polished tannins. It all comes to an end with a layered finish that lingers with flavors of dark berries, chocolate and spices. Overall, the 2021 Mountainside Cabernet is already an absolute pleasure to drink, but it should also go on to evolve beautifully over the course of the next decade. (JD)" (12/2023) 93 points

"Rich with concentration and palate-coating flavor, this wine is approachable and satisfying. Toasty oak aromatics couple with flavors of black fruits, sweet tobacco and freshly ground coffee. Abundant while velvety tannins persist into a long finish. (EB)" (07/2024) 92+ points
The Wine Independent:
"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Mountainside Cabernet Sauvignon rolls out with exuberant notes of juicy plums, ripe blackberries, and Morello cherries leading to hints of pencil shavings, cinnamon toast, and underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate is vibrant with crunchy black fruit flavors and a refreshing line, finishing softly textured and with good length. (LPB)" (11/2023)
