When I was growing up, no one ever said “the Hamptons.” The towns were less seen as the collective they are today, and as individual, very distinct hamlets. As they grew in popularity and population, they became more of an amorphous concept—but to me, they are very unique, with a personality of their own. Which is why we reimagined this year's guide by village, for easier navigation, but also out of respect for the history and community of each place.
No matter which way you draw the lines, this part of the world with its magnificent stretches of beach and perfect tomatoes is unmatched in my view. Though these days this part of Long Island is no longer so far from the maddening crowds, there is much to discover in its many corners.
Love, Gwyneth
