A common misconception of our ranking of America’s 100 Greatest Courses is that we’re looking to identify the 100 Greatest Championship layouts. Instead, we remind our 1,700-plus course-ranking panelists that they should reward courses that offer interesting modes of challenge beyond mere length and penalty.
That distinction is reflected in our definition of Challenge, one of our six scoring criteria used to determine our course rankings. We used those panelist scores from our latest America’s 100 Greatest and Second 100 Greatest lists to rank the 25 most challenging courses in the United States.
