Contrary to what golf fans might think, the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass was not Pete Dye's brainchild. In fact, it wasn’t even his idea (originally) to incorporate the peninsula concept. The suggestion came from Dye’s wife and design partner, Alice—and since the first Players Championship held at the Stadium course in 1982, the one-shotter has become one of golf’s most well-known holes.
Of course, there have been copycats of island greens created at courses around the world—and even some that predate TPC Sawgrass (like the 11th at The Creek in the photo). We’ve compiled all our favorites in this collection of the best island greens in golf.
