A bad day for Good Good

For all of golf’s timeless qualities, some developments in the game are uniquely suited to the current moment. The week-long saga of Good Good’s driver ad gone terribly wrong is maybe the best example.

The latest twists came Thursday afternoon, first when Callaway Golf, which has partnered with the popular YouTube brand on a new driver, announced it was severing ties with Good Good and donating $1 million to various charities that support efforts to prevent violence against women.

“These actions do not undo the harm caused or excuse our role in it. We sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt, disappointed, or offended by this incident,” Callaway Golf said in a statement.

Shortly after Callaway’s announcement, the PGA Tour released a statement that said Good Good had decided to step away as sponsor for the tour’s upcoming stop in Austin, but that the tournament would still be held in November.

It’s a big week for everybody at the Tour Championship, Scottie Scheffler included. He says he’s 95 percent healthy after suffering from hand, foot and mouth disease last week at the BMW Championship. Even with the illness, he finished T-12 and now eyes a victory at East Lake that can cement a second FedEx Cup title and player of the year honors for a fifth straight year. Scheffler already as the respect of his peers, but the way he handled the situation at the BMW earned him even more. “We all knew he was battling it,” said Gary Woodland, who shares a coach with Scheffler. “He has got blisters on his hands and is trying to grip the club. That just shows you how dang good he is to show up and finish 12th or however he finished last week. It's impressive.”
