Tiger Woods’ design portfolio continues to grow. A report from a local newspaper in Northern Ireland states that Woods has been named the design team behind the first championship golf links to be built in the country in more than 100 years.
Bellarena, a small town on the northwest coast of Northern Ireland about 20 miles from Royal Portrush, which hosted the 2025 and 2019 Open Championships and is ranked fifth in our World 100.
This would be a big deal for Woods’ TGR design team. It’s validation for Tiger’s group to get its first job in Europe, and specifically in the United Kingdom. Jack Nicklaus’ design team, with nearly 400 courses worldwide to its name, is just now working on its second course in the United Kingdom. These projects are rare.
The significance of Woods working in Northern Ireland is also interesting. He’s obviously buddies with Rory McIlroy, who grew up about 70 miles away from Bellarena. McIlroy fancies himself an aficionado of great course design, so you could assume he would make a point to visit Tiger’s project. Who knows, maybe that inspires McIlroy to get into course design one day? Like we said, this is a big deal.
