Philadelphia golf is in the spotlight again as the U.S. Amateur is played this week at Merion Golf Club and Philadelphia Country Club. This comes after the PGA Championship was held at Aronimink Country Club earlier this year. I did a video proving my point that Philly is probably the most underrated golf city in the United States ahead of the PGA, and it’s a point worth reiterating.
New York and LA are certainly a leg above at the top end. Chicago comes close to Philly, but to me, golf in Philly doesn’t get enough credit. Maybe that’s changing. The PGA Tour visited Philly Cricket Club last year, and now Aronimink and Merion (East) are taking centerstage this year.
Don’t sleep on Philadelphia Country Club, which underwent a massive two-year renovation to its William Flynn-designed Spring Mill course by architect Jim Nagle. Nagle used photos from the 1939 U.S. Open hosted at Philly C.C. to recreate Flynn’s design intent—repositioning bunkers, widening fairways and restoring strategy.
The below video from ultra-talented golf photographer/videographer Jeff Marsh captures just how good Philly C.C. is looking now.
