How We Find Our Faves

The Research

After scouring the market for trends and launches and interviewing chefs and tastemakers, our editors devise a series of tests to assess each category on its most important factors. For example, chef's knives should always be sharp, well-balanced, and make quick work of preparing ingredients.

The Tests

Our labs in Iowa, Alabama, and NYC span over 100,000 square feet, including more than 50 test kitchens — and we send products to our experts and editors across the country, too. We collect quantitative and qualitative insights, like how easy it is to use an air fryer or how hard it is to clean bits out of the basket.

The Faves

After rating items, we decide which deserve our seal. The top pick may not work for every cook, so we also award other categories, like "best value" or "best splurge" for Dutch ovens. We report key testing notes and pros and cons, and we regularly revisit our lists to flag upgrades, deals, and more.
