Myth: Food banks only serve canned, shelf-stable food.

Reality: At Feeding America, we're not just filling shelves, we're filling fridges with fresh, quality food.

Food banks today are evolving, vibrant community hubs, offering fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, and even medically tailored meals in addition to shelf-stable pantry items. Last year alone, our network of food banks distributed nearly 3.7 billion pounds of nutrient-dense items like fresh produce, protein, and dairy to our communities.

"I want to keep working in my garden and going on hikes—so I need to eat right."

When Alyson retired and started living on a fixed income, she joined a local produce subscription program through 'Elepaio Social Services and Hawai'i Foodbank. It allows her to buy fresh fruits and vegetables from nearby farmers markets—helping her stay active and connected to her Hawaiian roots.

This is just one of the stories behind our movement for nourishment, dignity, and long-term wellness.
