This is urgent. The Senate could pass a bill next week with devastating Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid cuts resulting in taking about 9.5 billion meals off the table for neighbors facing hunger annually and ending health care coverage for about 8 million people. If passed, this would be the deepest cut to SNAP in history. And taking away health care coverage by adding new red-tape would make it harder for people to stay healthy enough to work! The proposed bill forces states to absorb SNAP costs for the first time ever. State budgets are already strained. They simply do not have the money to replace this longstanding federal commitment. State governments will be forced to cut SNAP benefits further, cut other vital services like education and infrastructure, or—the absolute nightmare scenario—stop providing SNAP benefits entirely. Tell your senators: STOP the cuts to SNAP and Medicaid >> What's more: Rural areas will be hit especially hard. In some rural counties, as many as 50% of children experience food insecurity. And SNAP dollars will stop going to rural grocery stores and farmers, where they boost local economies. On top of that, rural hospitals depend on Medicaid to keep their doors open. Nearly half of rural hospitals are already operating at a loss. Medicaid cuts would result in reduced services, delays in much-needed equipment and supplies... or hospital closures altogether.
