Known in France by names like Côt, Auxerrois and Pressac, you are probably more familiar with the common name of today's focus varietal: Malbec. While its history leads back to France, Malbec nowadays is a mainstay in South American wine production, specifically in Argentina where the varietal doesn't really resemble the wines made in Cahors or the outlying regions of Bordeaux where it's still grown.
The Argentinian Malbec strain that is so prolific today has adapted itself to the terrain of the Argentine landscape extremely well. When done right Malbec offers a softer, more fruit-forward profile than Cabernet Sauvignon does yet maintains a fine acidity on the back end as the varietal grows extremely well in higher, cooler altitudes. Not to mention, a tremendous value for red wine lovers.
