Every now and then, a winemaker does something so purely driven by passion that makes you wonder why aren't all wines passion projects

without a heafty pricetag.
The winemaking team at Herdade de Coelherios located in Alentejo wine region headed up into the high-altitude Serra de São Mamede Mountains (just three miles from the Spanish border) looking for a specific vineyard site for future projects, they stumbled upon a hidden, century-old "ghost vineyard." Tucked away in complete isolation, this spectacular north-facing site features a traditional field blend where white and red grape varieties grow side-by-side, exactly as they were planted a hundred years ago.

Captivated by the unique energy of the site, the team decided to buy the grapes on the spot, despite having no immediate plan for how they would use them.
Instead of trying to tame the vineyard or separate the varieties, They chose to embrace its wild, historic character. The result is the Coelheiros Limited Edition Tinto, a natural red wine from century old grapes. Because of the extreme age of these vines, the exact composition is a mystery, as far as tiny percentages of the indigenous grapes go. It represents a true liquid archive of ancient varieties like Trincadeira, Grand Noir, Aragonez, Castelão, and Moreto, with some others in the mix.

This wine is a total departure from the classic, structured style that Coelheiros is famous for. It is a raw, energetic, and beautifully alive natural expression of a forgotten mountain terroir. Best of all, the philosophy behind this Limited Edition project is strict: these are micro-productions with no expectation of repetition in future vintages. When these bottles are gone, this specific piece of history is gone forever.

To put the scale of this project into perspective, a mere 28 cases of this natural beauty were imported into the entire country.

Here's what to expect:
It pours a vibrant ruby-red. The nose immediately opens up with rich aromas of plum, cherry, and ripe black fruits, after 45 minutes or so you will start to really dig into the more complex flavors of underscored layers of sweet spice and a subtle, smoky hint. On the palate, it is beautifully velvety right from the initial pour. There is a gorgeous density and richness to the fruit, but it stays perfectly balanced by a striking vein of high-altitude acidity and fine, well-integrated tannins that carry through to a long, seamless finish.
