EX-Chateau
2019 & 2020 Chateau Pontet Canet
1.5L Magnums ONLY
The 5th Growth that should be a 1st Growth....
You’re receiving this exclusive offer because you signed up to receive our collector-focused wine emails, and this is exactly the kind of rare opportunity we reserve for serious buyers. We just secured a limited parcel of magnums of 2019 and 2020 Château Pontet-Canet, direct from the estate’s cellars and arriving in September. Pontet-Canet continues to be the ultimate outlier in Pauillac. It sits next to Mouton Rothschild, performs like a First Growth in nearly every top vintage, and yet still costs a fraction of what it should. Add to that its fully biodynamic farming, amphora-aged structure, and massive critic support, and you have a wine that collectors and sommeliers fight over every year.
Both 2019 and 2020 are among the estate’s most praised modern releases. The 2019 earned a perfect 100 points from Falstaff and comes with near-universal scores in the 98 to 100 range. It’s a powerhouse with elegance, showing floral aromatics, dark fruit, and silky tannins that rival the top wines of the Médoc. The 2020, meanwhile, was hailed by James Suckling as “delicate and pristine, yet compact with lots of energy and power.” In both vintages, you’re getting Grand Vin pedigree and aging potential on par with Lafite or Latour, but in rare magnum format and at a dramatically better price.
Sourced directly from the Château’s cellar, these magnums arrive in September with full provenance and are offered in original wooden cases of three (OWC3). if you collect the wood (standard shipping rates apply on the wood as they would have to be shipped separately). If you’ve been waiting for the right time to stock up on large-format Bordeaux that delivers elite quality and long-term value, this is it. Both vintages are built to age 30 to 40 years, and in magnum, they’ll evolve even more gracefully.

"Aromas of blackcurrants and black cherries with hints of crushed walnuts, grilled thyme, cocoa powder and graphite. It’s full-bodied with layers of ultra-fine, silky tannins that elegantly coat your palate, allowing the juicy and vibrant fruit to shine. Delicate and pristine, yet compact with lots of energy and power to uncover in the coming years. It lasts for minutes and is delicious now. The purity of fruit is really impressive. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. 50% new oak 15% old oak and 35% concrete amphorae. Try after 2027."

The flagship from this estate, the 2020 Château Pontet-Canet is a beauty based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 4% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 50% new oak, with 35% in amphora. Deep purple-hued with a great nose of dark currants, plums, tobacco leaf, and truffly earth, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel and a great finish. The higher Merlot content here really shows in its overall sexy, supple, seamless style, and while this already offers pleasure, it's going to be one for the ages as well.

Inky purple with ruby reflections in colour. Lots of firm but upright tannins, a good dollop of graphite, pencil lead and cassis bud, there is depth through the mid palate shot through with wild blackberry, hawthorn, sage, rosemary and wild mint. It has personality, and is a little old school in the best possible way. Recommended. They have avoided the over-concentrated feel of some Pauillacs in the vintage, while remaining true to the appellation. 4% Petit Verdot completes the blend, 50% new oak 35% amphoras, 15% one-year barrels. First full vintage for Mathieu Bessonnet who replaced the previous long-term director Jean-Michel Comme in 2020. 100% first wine, as it has been for the past four years. 45% will be aged in new oak barrels, 15% one year, 40% in amphoras. The mildew pressure was stressful in the early part of the year, but they had learnt from 2018, and brought in the manpower to get around the whole vineyard in a (very long) day, so their yields ended up being close to normal.

Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Pontet-Canet is deep garnet-purple colored. It needs a lot of swirling and aeration to coax out notes of crushed blackcurrants, blueberry compote, and candied violets, leading to suggestions of allspice, fertile loam, kirsch, and dark chocolate with a touch of Indian spices. The medium-bodied palate delivers a firm backbone of grainy tannins with loads of bright, perfumed red and black fruits and seamless acidity, finishing long and fragrant. This is stunning.
97 Points Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
With a nose that displays truffle, tobacco leaf, cedar, licorice, and black currants, the wine is soft, fresh, refined, and focuses you on its cassis, blackberry, earth, spice, and peppery herb character. There are no hard edges in the finish, just soft, vibrant currants, herbs, and spice. The wine is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV, pH 3.8. The wine is aged in 45% new, French oak barrels and amphora. The harvest took place September 14, to September 30. Drink from 2026-2055

100 Points Peter Moser - Falstaff
Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on rim. For the first time since 2011, the proportion of Merlot is somewhat higher, the bouquet accordingly more characterised by heart cherries than by the usual cassis de Pauillac, delicate nougat and caramel, fine herbal spice. Powerful, tightly meshed, shows good expression, chocolatey touch, ripe tannins, great complexity, great length and spiciness, a very independent personality, a huge promise for the future, already evident: this wine has everything a world-class wine needs.
99 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown - The Wine Independent
Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Pontet-Canet is deep garnet-purple in color. It features notes of prunes, creme de cassis, and wilted roses, followed by suggestions of spice box, iron ore, Ceylon tea, and underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate is rich, concentrated, and seductive, with a racy backbone and ripe, fine-grained tannins supporting the complex, layered flavors, finishing long and minerally.
99 Points James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com
The aromas to this are really amazing, with a potpourri of spices and dried flowers, as well as redcurrants, sweet plums and even some peaches. Full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate in an encompassing yet always elegant and pure way. It’s succulent and unadulterated. Like crushed, perfectly ripened grapes. The length is rather endless. The tannins build. Fabulous young red. 35% in amphora and the rest in 50% new oak and 15% one-year oak. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2028, but an absolute joy to taste now.
98-100 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"The blend this year is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Pontet-Canet has the most gorgeous, lifted perfume of lilacs, dark chocolate, Morello cherries and rosehip tea over a core of crème de cassis, plum preserves, licorice and woodsmoke with a waft of fragrant soil. Full-bodied, rich and fantastically opulent, the palate offers layer upon layer of ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and mineral laced. A real head-turner, this beauty is absolutely going to steal your heart!"
98 Points Georgina Hindle - Decanter
Such gorgeous aromatics of freshly picked violets, cherries and bramble fruits - pretty and quite delicate. The texture is smooth and succulent, mouth coating but full of soft tannins which have the most delicious black cherry, blackcurrant flesh and liquorice tinge to them - so satisfying. Extremely well balanced and well integrated, this has restrained power, it's not rich or particularly round but straight, direct and layered rather than wide. Really long finish with great freshness and touches of cool blueberries. This is just such a great wine, everything you want and you know there's power there promising a long life. Great winemaking on show. 35% aged in concrete, 50% new oak, 15% in barrels of one year, for 16-18 months. This year there's a new label, the drawing of the house has remained but the font is more elegant and modern. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
