94 Points Decanter, from an almost 750-year-old Chateau, a world-renowned consulting winemaker, and under $15 a bottle. Intrigued?
Chateau Livran sits about 30 miles north of the famed Saint Estpehe in the commune of Saint-Germain-d’Esteuil. Founded in 1280, it has been around for almost 750 years, has been through numerous wars and occupations, and fast forward to today is making some world-class wines!
The property was acquired in 2013 by Olivier Michon and Edwige Lurton-Michon, who have heavily invested in rapidly improving the property, and most importantly, the cellar. Now with state-of-the-art facilities for winemaking, Chateau Livran’s mission is to showcase the diversity of their terroir to the best of their ability by focusing on each detail along the way.
The wine consultant for this project is Eric Boissenot, who has worked with almost any famed Bordeaux Chateau you can name throughout his career, including Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Pichon Baron, and so so many more!!
With such a powerful ownership/consulting team, this wine showcases quality well beyond its $13.99 price tag! The 2020 vintage benefited from near-perfect growing conditions. A warm, sunny season with well-timed rains, allowed the grapes to ripen fully and develop vibrant fruit and structure. 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the blend, and the nose offers incredible black fruited notes along with cedar and tobacco. The palate is balanced, smooth, and deeply layered with black fruits and touch of earthiness.
Check out Decanter’s 94 point review from the World Wine Awards:
"Through meticulous vineyard management and modern winemaking techniques, the Michon family has breathed new life into Château Livran, capturing the essence of its terroir with each bottle. From the complex and inviting aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, and fig to the plush and intensely concentrated fruit palate of raspberry, mulberry, and cassis, every sip of the Château Livran screams for another."
This is your new value Bordeaux!!
