95pts incredible WHITE from the middle of the Atlantic ocean....Azores...

Wines like this don't come around too often so here is a rare look at
The 2022 Vinha Centenária from Azores Wine Company
Just a decade after launching Fitapreta in Alentejo, António Maçanita set his sights on somewhere far more extreme, the volcanic island of Pico in the Azores, a UNESCO World Heritage site nearly halfway between Portugal and New York.

As you can imagine, this is not the easiest place to farm, let alone grow wine. It is raw, unforgiving, and nearly impossible to continuously produce a high volume of wine.

The 2022 Vinha Centenária white is a field blend led by 85% Arinto dos Açores, with Verdelho, Boal, and Alicante Branco from centenarian vines planted just steps from the ocean...... 325 feet to be exact.

(See pictures here to REALLY understand the scope of wine growing here...remarkable)

Grapes are hand-picked, sorted, and then directly pressed, followed by 12 hours of cold settling. First press (70%) is fermented and aged in horizontal stainless steel tanks, and the second press (30%) is fermented and aged for nine months in three-year-old French oak barrels without batonnage.

In the glass, it’s bright and super fresh, but not simple. Think lemon peel, a little sea spray, and that clean “wet stone” kind of minerality. There’s a salty edge that makes total sense once you know the vines are basically growing next to the ocean. It’s crisp and energetic, but with just enough texture to keep it interesting.

It’s naturally amazing with seafood, oysters, clams, grilled fish but honestly, it’s also great with something richer like pork belly because of that acidity and saltiness. It's an exceptional wine, and so is the price..... so don't let this slip by.

Only 866 bottles produced.

2022 Azores Wine Company " Vinha Centenaria"

95pts James Suckling
"Hints of lemon peel, wet grass and a touch of white pepper. The palate is very absorbing, with lots of saline acidity, tension and a timid phenolic touch that concludes with a mellow, velvety texture. This comes from a 100-year-old vineyard planted on lava cracks on the island of Pico. One of the few ungrafted vineyards on the Island. A blend of 85% arinto dos acores with verdelho, alicante blanco and boal."

"The 2022 Vinha Centenária comes from a centenary plot planted with 85% Arinto dos Açores at 100 meters from the sea. The rest is Verdelho, Alicante Branco and Boal. The wine is salty and tasty, but it already shows some honeyed notes. Seventy percent of the must fermented and matured in horizontal stainless steel tanks, and the rest was in used French oak barrels for some 20 months. It has 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.2 and 7.01 grams of acidity. It is ripe without excess and has good freshness. 2022 will be similar to 2020, as it was cropped from a humid year with super low yields.
