Good Morning Sabah People, We are excited to introduce the second edition of our Sabah Artist Series with the the very fun, very expressive and multi-talented painter and illustrator, Maxine McCrann.
As a friend and admirer of her colorful & bold artwork, we asked Maxine to paint 50 pairs of Sabahs in her signature style.
With no color combination repeated, each pair in this collection is truly one-of-a-kind.
To celebrate this moment, we've also created a MM x Sabah Bandana, made of 100% wool in Como, Italy. A limited edition of 50 pieces, it was created from an original artwork by Maxine using artist crayons. "I love how you can see the real markings of the crayon and the imperfection of it," says Maxine. "The bandanas are so full of life and gorgeous to wear all sorts of ways. The accidental theme of the shoes plus bandana together is a celebration of joy, color, and beautiful imperfection."
Now available on the Sabah Portal!
Sincerely,
The Sabah Dealer --

"These shoes - and I know, because I have two pairs I have worn every single day for over a year - are so gorgeous and full of life, I just wanted to do them justice."

Maxine illustrated the food & drinks that bring her and her community joy (wine, olives, lobster, fruit, cake, espresso. Yum!) in her signature style, that we then screen-printed onto a 100% wool bandana, made in Como, Italy!

As a painter & illustrator based in Toronto, CA, Maxine McCrann's work is rooted in expressive color and a delightful sense of fun -- focusing on scenes that are reminiscent of the beauty of everyday life, small pleasures, and gatherings with friends (often over good food and drink).
"I’d describe myself as a multimedia artist - I mostly paint larger-scale pieces on canvas, but love to draw and build things, too."
Sharing the same love for bold colors and a shared meal, we knew Maxine would be perfect to collaborate with on our second Sabah Artist Series collection. Once she happily accepted, she got to work in her sunlit studio in the Junction neighborhood of Toronto.
"I love my studio so so so much . Having a space all to myself has been really transformative and allows me to work on many projects at once - it was certainly really helpful when painting 50 pairs of Sabahs!"
Inspired by bright colors and unique color combinations, Maxine fines inspiration wherever she can spot them -- a good food market, a cute restaurant, a friend’s house for dinner... these places all get her thinking about things she'd love to paint.
"I love pink. And orange. And red-orange, like a fresh tomato soup. I feel so energized when I use them, like looking at a beautiful sunset after a really nice day."
Using her palette of bright colors and highly specialized leather paint, Maxine painted her signature emblems - horses, oysters, butterflies, and tulips on 50 custom pairs of Sabahs and one special Bolo (see if you can spot it!)

"These shoes - and I know, because I have two pairs I have worn every single day for over a year - are so gorgeous and full of life, I just wanted to do them justice. Getting in a flow helped me think of them as very beautifully made little canvases."
Maxine's fun, signature style transformed the Sabahs into colorful miniature artworks, and her hope was to bring a little levity and joy to people’s outfits.
"People would come into my studio and smile with surprise and point out the ones they liked the best, and it made me really happy to know they were bringing a little happiness to their day."
We loved working with Maxine and are so excited to get these Sabahs out into the world to be worn and enjoyed (and gifted!). Before ending our conversation we asked Maxine, in true Sabah spirit, Where to Next?
"In a literal sense, I would love to attend a residency where I can paint and draw all day in a new environment around all types of artists. In a metaphorical sense, I’d love to do more collaborative work like this, with different types of people and brands that push me to think differently and use different parts of my creative mind. "
