Sabah Digest: Notes from London 🇬🇧

Hello Sabah People,

I’m writing from my desk at home, looking back at photos from a trip last weekend to London.

I’ve traveled there almost twice-a-year since we opened up on Chiltern Street in 2019. So while you’d imagine I know the city well, the truth is London takes time to grasp. As if New York City was flattened out into a collection of villages — each with its own flavor.

I will say — this trip was my favorite, returning to some longtime favorite spots and then discovering new ones that I’ll certainly return to.

With long lists of London recommendations easy to come by (and overwhelming), I'll give you just four highlights from our weekend:

Andrew Edmunds. We literally stumbled, jet-lagged, upon and into this cafe for lunch on our first day in London. A long candle burns at every table in this warm, intimate restaurant considered 'one of the bastions of Old SoHo.' You can feel that, for sure.

The Coach & Horses. This pub in SoHo stands out from the rest in vibe & decor: the interior lit brightly from the huge corner windows and the crowd - a haunt for SoHo personalities & journalists. A perfect first stop for a noon-time beer after the red-eye from NYC!

The River Cafe. My favorite place to have lunch in the whole world... the food, the ambience, the crowd -- it makes you want to linger (our lunch took nearly 3 hours). Designed by Richard Rogers, it's a pioneering restaurant along the Thames in Hammersmith that's been running strong since 1987.

The National Theatre. Seeing a show would have been sublime, but simply a visit to this Brutalist building and a walk through the interiors, a browse of the gift shop and a coffee or glass of wine at one of its cafes is enough. I can't wait to get back and see a show here!

A Few Other Notes From London.

We've written about this place before, but Towpath Cafe is an absolute gem along the canal in East London. We stopped here on Sunday morning before a long walk through Dalston & Hackney.

Love a late morning donut & espresso at St John in Marylebone.

A glass of champagne or an espresso at the clever Poster Bar at the Royal Academy of Arts is always an inspiring stop... great place to buy a poster too!

Find respite in the Zaha Hadid designed cafe / space at Serpentine Gallery North; a great stop during a long stroll through Hyde Park.

A visit to the Tate Modern -- their current exhibition titled "Nigerian Modernism" is absolutely incredible... not to be missed. I left with a book about the show!

Only Alto Boots in London.

Some rain, some shine and lots of overcast drizzly days, aside from our evening party at Sabah House London where I wore my Brown Suede Bolos, a pair of Prato Green Alto Boots were my footwear of choice for the rest of the trip. I wore 'em all day criss-crossing town by foot, cab and tube; and then dressed 'em up at night for evenings out with the misses ;) The perfect travel footwear for London!
