The Men's World Cup has begun, and we want to recognize that this global tournament brings with it a lot of conflicting emotions. We both took the time to reflect and share our thoughts with you all 🖤

For the first time since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, I got the urge to buy an official FIFA Panini Sticker Book. If you haven’t heard of these, or had the joy of using one, the aim is to fill the entire book with stickers of every player at the tournament. The final product becomes a time capsule of that particular World Cup, preserving the history of every individual, every country, and every game.

I hadn’t thought about these little books in twelve years. However, this summer, as I looked for ways to engage with the games that were soon approaching, I found myself suddenly returning back to the Panini Sticker Book.

My memories of this book embody the relationship I want to have with the tournament this summer. I want to know the faces of everyone, not just those on my own country’s roster. I want to learn their names, see them, and feel inspired to learn more about teams I knew nothing about as I slowly filled in their roster. I want to share this engagement with my community: trade stickers, compare progress, and turn it into a social experience. To me, this represents the World Cup in its truest form.

The World Cup is about embracing the opportunity to connect through competition. This feels more salient than ever as the tournament arrives on U.S. soil. It arrives at a moment when identity, immigration, and belonging are at the heart of political debate. When the very diversity that makes the World Cup so powerful is being threatened and contested. Meanwhile, the World Cup offers an invitation to engage: engage with the world, engage with your community, and engage with those you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Whether through a Panini Sticker Book, a watch party, a pickup game, or simply tuning in to support your team, I hope every Reimaginer finds a way to engage with the tournament this summer that means something to them.

Visas denied. Jersey designs rejected. Ticket prices astronomically raised. I've had one question rattling around in my brain this summer, during the entire lead up to the Men's World Cup: can we call this a World Cup when most of the world can't watch it, play it, or enjoy it?

Despite the political backdrop of this global tournament, my hope is quite stubborn. I am moved by the displays of humanity and cultural connection that pass between fans of different countries. I am reminded that the beautiful game is bigger than those who try to weaponize it or strip it of its power. I am encouraged by our summer mantra, Football Loves You, and what it represents: love, football, Pride, and community. Above all else, I am inspired to meet this moment with both my love for football and my voice that with always call for justice, equity, and inclusivity.

And yet, the realities of this tournament necessitate more than encouraging words and hopeful sentiments. For all those who traveled or will be traveling to the United States, it's so important to know your rights. Not everyone feels safe or welcome at the World Cup, especially due to threats of ICE and immigration at World Cup matches and in World Cup cities. In an effort to help you feel safe and be informed, RE has cultivated immigration resources so you can know your rights during this World Cup.

At RE, we believe the beautiful game is made beautiful by the diverse, passionate, global tapestry of fans who love it. Football is for All — on the pitch, in the stands, and wherever you flex your fandom!

ICYMI: Six women are officiating matches at the Men's World Cup!

Of the 170 match officials FIFA appointed for the tournament, six are women. This ties the record for the highest number of women officiating at a Men’s World Cup.

The officials are: Tori Penso and Katia García as referees, Brooke Mayo, Kathryn Nesbitt, and Sandra Ramírez as assistant referees, and Tatiana Guzman as a video match official. While this is a huge milestone and moment of celebration, there is still work to be done!

⚽ How are you reimagining the game?

BIA FC is a women-first platform for enjoyment and celebration of football. We want to create a space where everyone feels welcome and comfortable, and can express their support for their favourite team or simply watch the game without being questioned or scrutinised.

We organise events - watch parties for men’s and women’s football, pub quizzes, panel talks, creative workshops, and tournaments - encouraging both men and women to attend, while giving priority to women. We hope to make football experiences more friendly, uniting and accessible.

🫂 What is core to your community?

Respect and fun are fundamental for what we are trying to do. Our events invite a range of people: passionate football fans whose mood is dictated by the 11 people on the pitch, those who appreciate brilliant goals but don’t care for the tactics and names of players, and those who are trying to get into football but aren’t sure if this space is for them. Everybody is welcome as long as they are respectful towards each other and are keen on having a good time.

💛 What are you most proud of?

We’re the most proud of how our events make people feel. One of our favourite comments we’ve received is “If watching football was like this every time, I’d be way more into it”.

We try to curate an experience where people can be themselves and express their inner fan in a comfortable way, with our community members not being afraid to ask about why this player received a yellow card or what is a deflection. This is how we imagine football spaces should feel like - welcoming and friendly.

🔥 What is your football hot take?

Jules: No substitutions after 90th minute. Bin time wasting!

Sara: Yellow card = 10 minutes off the pitch and you can’t replace the player … less tumbling for no reason please !
