The first week of August brings a scintillating lineup, from Sauvignon Blanc interpreted through two of the world's great regions to a remarkable Garnacha from one of Spain's most sought-after young producers. Whether you're drawn to blue-chip Napa or Sancerre, or curious about a wine that's quickly becoming a favorite among collectors, each bottle has a story worth discovering. First, 2024 Comando G "La Bruja" Garnacha Sierra de Gredos offers a fascinating introduction to the Sierra de Gredos, where old, high-elevation vines produce a style of Garnacha that's light on its feet, mineral-driven, and wonderfully expressive. Founders Dani Landi and Fernando García are redefining what Spanish Garnacha can be, and while their top bottlings have become scarce and expensive, "La Bruja" remains an outstanding value from one of Spain's fastest-rising names. Next, the 2025 Spottswoode Napa-Sonoma Counties Sauvignon Blanc shows why this winery has long been considered one of California's illustrious producers of this variety. A blend of 95% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Sémillon, it balances fragrant jasmine, apple blossom, and citrus with white peach, pear, lime rind, and a refreshing mineral finish. The 2025 vintage is especially notable as Spottswoode's first made entirely from organically farmed vineyards, continuing a four-decade tradition of elegant, cellar-worthy Sauvignon Blanc. Finally, the 2022 Domaine Vacheron "Les Lieu-Dit" Sancerre is a beautiful expression of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc from one of the region's most revered estates. Farmed biodynamically and sourced from the family's prized silex and chalk soils, it captures the purity and precision that have defined nine generations of winemaking. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more terroir-driven Sancerre anywhere in the appellation. As James Suckling aptly describes it, this is "a seductive, minerally, textural and poised Sancerre."
