Before it gets warm outside and the prospect of heating up the oven makes us sweat, we’re enjoying the long days of winter with fun and comforting baking projects.

For inspiration, we turned to writer & poet Crystal Wilkinson, whose latest book explores the legacy of Black Appalachia with soothing recipes like Gingerbread & Sauce, Chicken & Dumplings, and “Praisesong Biscuits.” (Keep reading for the recipe!)

Crystal’s new culinary memoir, “Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts: Stories and Recipes From Five Generations of Black Country Cooks,” honors both the untold heritage of Black Appalachia and the land that provided for her family for generations.

Her recipe for a classic, comforting biscuit is our new go-to, served beside fluffy hills of scrambled eggs and little bowls of fresh berries.
