On the strange in-between

Hi none,

The leaves on my quaint street in LA have started to turn, which would be lovely if it were not also eighty five degrees! It’s a bit discombobulating to see stores sell Halloween decorations when most of us around the country are still feeling the heat, no?

Nevertheless, what I have found is that the calendar turning matters more than the weather does. Something in me resets in September regardless of the thermometer, and I have been paying attention to what I reach for when the routine comes back. Right now it is Ina Garten's new podcast, Happy Hour, which is exactly as delightful as you would hope and has been my company while I cook. It is also Susan Alexandra's new charming sticker book, which is pure whimsy and which I did not know I needed. And it is my very small garden, where there is purple Japanese sweet potato in the ground that I am counting the days until I can harvest.

My cooking has slightly shifted too. September is also the perfect month for our new Fall Flavor Duo - a limited pairing of our fresh garlic and zesty lemon olive oils. We may not be layering our clothing yet, but we can always layer flavor: Rosette’s garlic deliciousness over roasted potatoes, Lucid in a simple green salad of arugula, parmesan, snap peas and pistachios. Fun fact: it took us over 30 rounds to get Rosette to that perfect balance of fresh crushed garlic flavor that brings depth with zero bitterness.

However September finds you, whether that is heat or leaves or both at once, I hope something in it resets for you too.
