You've probably heard a lot about both hemp and marijuana in the news or on social media. But what is the difference, and what does it have to do with CBD? We have answers!
Hemp and marijuana plants are both members of the cannabis species, but they have different biological makeups.
Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two of the most common cannabinoids, a type of naturally-occurring compound found in cannabis plants. While both CBD and THC are believed to have wellness benefits, only THC causes the "high" sensation people associate with marijuana. CBD is non-intoxicating.
THC and CBD are present in both hemp and marijuana plants, but the amounts differ greatly. Hemp contains more CBD than THC, while marijuana contains more THC than CBD. There are legal differences, too. At the federal level, hemp plants and products made from hemp are legal if they contain no more than 0.3% THC, while marijuana plants and products remain federally illegal. (State restrictions for both hemp and marijuana vary greatly from state to state.)
