Six myths about the Stanford MBA program

Truth: While we are a business school, our students come from a myriad of backgrounds. In fact, 81% of students studied something other than business as undergraduates. No matter what you’ve studied, at Stanford GSB, you'll have the opportunity to build upon your previous experience and continue to grow. 

Myth 2: We only accept candidates from well-known academic institutions or companies.

Truth: There is no single, well-trodden path to get to the GSB. Our students come from 145 different academic institutions, including community colleges, large public institutions, small liberal arts colleges, private universities, and military academies. Additionally, on average, we admit students from 300 different professional organizations, covering small nonprofits and family businesses as well as large corporations and government agencies.

Myth 3: Applicants need a recommendation from either a GSB alum or a very important person. 

Truth: We are more concerned with the letter’s contents than its writer. You should choose someone who knows you well, has directly interacted with you within the last three years, will provide supporting anecdotes and examples, and would happily spend the time to write a thoughtful letter.

Myth 4: An MBA is too expensive.

Truth: A Stanford MBA degree is an investment in you and your future. To help you fund your attendance, Stanford offers various generous fellowships and other financial aid options. The average fellowship is $80,000 over two years. We will work with you to make your Stanford MBA dream a reality.

Myth 5: The Stanford MBA program is only focused on entrepreneurship and technology.

Truth: Our students and graduates go on to find success in a variety of industries and professions. You’ll also emerge from our program with a broader idea of success, from strength of character to self-awareness and commitment to business and society. Myth 6: There is no escaping California; you will stay there. 

Truth: We do love California, but our graduates end up all over the world. Sure, we’re located in the heart of Silicon Valley and there are ample opportunities in the Golden State, but the Stanford MBA program opens doors across continents. Our alumni chapters are far-reaching, with 45 chapters outside of the United States. Your journey at the GSB will lead you to wherever you want to go.
