Roger Erickson is an American photographer whose timeless portraits have helped define the visual language of music and culture for more than two decades. Known for his eye for both truth and style, Erickson has captured legends in moments that are as iconic as they are intimate. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, and beyond—culminating in a historic milestone as the first Black photographer to shoot the cover of Vogue. Erickson’s connection to the late J Dilla—one of Detroit’s most beloved musical pioneers and our 2025 Great American—runs deep. As the last photographer to shoot Dilla before his passing, Erickson carries that moment with him, a quiet testament to legacy, trust, and shared creative spirit.
