Not All Probiotics Are Created Equal. The probiotics aisle is overflowing and overwhelming— the term ''probiotic'' appears on everything from kombucha to ice cream to cosmetics. In a confusing and misleading category, we are here to clarify the facts.

How to Identify a Probiotic Science defines probiotics as: ''Live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.''¹ —Dr. Gregor Reid, Ph.D., MBA, Seed Scientific Board Member²

Let's Break That Down A probiotic must be alive. Microbes need to survive processing, shipping, as well as the time they sit in their packaging AND make it through ingestion to your gut. A probiotic must be administered in a clinically studied dosage. The number of microbes in a probiotic should match the dosage used in the corresponding clinical trial demonstrating the benefit of the particular bacterial strain. A probiotic must confer a health benefit on the host (in this case, you). Studies must be performed to evaluate the effect of the specific strain(s) on the host (that's you!) for which the probiotics are intended. Only once a bacteria has demonstrated a concrete health benefit in a given host, may it then be designated a ''probiotic''.
