Hi friend, I've got a soft spot for vintage horror comics. Tiny teams, fast turnarounds, almost no budget... and those limitations ended up making something special. That gave horror comics a unique aesthetic: Just black ink. Small budgets and tight deadlines meant black and white was the norm. Drama came from large areas of black ink, heavy shadows, and dark silhouettes. Novel magazine formats. The Comic Code pretty much destroyed the golden age of American horror comics. Some got around it by moving to a magazine format. Which was cool because it created a format of comics, written pieces, and page upon page of kitschy ads. Hatching, halftones, and scratchy linework. One of the biggest splits from superhero comics. Artists built nervous energy with hatching, quick strokes, and scratchy lines.
Our new tutorial walks you through inking a comic illustration, with an emphasis on this classic style. So set aside some time this weekend to watch the tutorial. And maybe grab a new set of inkers to go with it!
