Store Your Ebike and Battery Inside
Putting your ebike in storage for an extended period of time? We always advise storing your ebike in a dry, indoor location away from the elements, like the garage, shed, or your home and away from entrances and exits. If it’s wet when you load it in, dry your ebike with a clean, dry cloth and make sure to keep it stored upright. If you have to keep your ebike outside, bring the battery indoors and store it in a fire safe location away from points of entry/exit out of an abundance of caution. Keep in mind, damage to a battery may not be visible from the outside so it’s always good practice to exercise a high degree of care when handling and storing your ebike battery. The bike frame can be stored under a waterproof cover but make sure to protect the terminal against accumulation of water and debris.

Pro Tip:

Bringing your battery inside is especially important if you’re storing your ebike under a tarp, since that kind of covering can create a greenhouse effect that could damage your battery or pose a safety hazard.

How to Store Your Battery
Let’s dive in a little deeper when it comes to your battery.
When you're not riding your bike, store ebike batteries indoors in dry, safe, temperature-controlled environment (between 50 °F - 77 °F /10 °C - 25 °C). Doing so will protect the battery from inclement weather, help it stay charged, maintain its longevity, and minimize the potential for excess moisture or debris to get into the battery case.
Failure to do so may void your warranty, render your battery non-functional, or cause a hazardous situation that could result in property damage and/or personal injury.
If you're putting your battery away for more than two weeks, keep it at around 75% charged and check on it every month to make sure it's staying at that level. Keeping it fully charged while in storage can lead to range loss over time.
If your battery wont charge or isn’t holding a charge, it might be damaged. Out of an abundance of caution, place your battery in a fireproof, metal container away from flammable materials or valuables. Then, contact customer support ASAP and our team will help you troubleshoot.

Pro Tip:

Always keep your battery's terminal and charging port covered when not in use. For your charging port, gently clean the area if there's any signs of corrosion or water pooling. We have terminal covers and external battery replacement port covers online, and for semi-integrated batteries, our customer service team can provide a replacement. On the underside of your battery, ensure that there are no gaps around the fuse covers and that the covers are always flush with the battery.

Never Submerge Your Ebike or Battery
You should never immerse or submerge either your battery or your bike in water or other liquid.
This can damage your electrical system or cause a hazardous situation. The ebike's components are all water-resistant, but you should still avoid large puddles, streams, or very heavy rain.
When storing it, you should take similar precautions to avoid moisture. After riding your ebike in wet conditions, inspect your bike to make sure all components are clear of dirt, debris, and moisture.

Avoid Corrosion
Avoiding corrosion is important for every rider, but those living around coastal climates need to be extra cautious when it comes to salt or saltwater. How do you know if there’s corrosion? Check your battery and terminal for any white, greenish, or blueish powder or rust.

Have You Heard About
Safe Shield Batteries?
|
|
While we stand behind our previous generation of UL-compliant batteries, we know that extra peace of mind goes a long way.
To keep the ebike movement rolling strong, we released Safe Shield Batteries last year, which provide additional thermal-resistant protection to our independently-tested, UL-compliant lineup.
Like all lithium-ion batteries, they still require full proper care and maintenance, but its unique design adds an extra layer of security, both on and off your ebike.
These are available standard on all Rad models released in 2024 or later, so you might already be riding with one. If you're looking to upgrade one of our earlier models, they're now up to $150 off, which means there's never been a better time to upgrade!
