He was battling a stomach ache but still won the tournament by one stroke over Joe Turnsea. Two decades later, on this very same day in 1953, Ben Hogan lifted the Claret Jug in his first and last Open Championship appearance. Frank Sinatra was in attendance in the second round, and Hogan captivated the gallery with his intrepid golf. He won by four shots.
