Previously we sent last week's copy — here's the workout edition. 3 Stealthy Endocrine Disruptors (Workout Edition) Last week we called out endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC’s) that lurk in the bath. This week we’re looking at our workouts. 1. Sports bras and leggings Activewear containing PFAS, BPA and other synthetic compounds can leach microplastics which we absorb through the skin, especially as we sweat. Look for clothing that is PFAS free. 2. Yoga mats Breathe deep. Not too deep. PVC yoga mats off-gas phthalates, known endocrine disruptors. Look for a non-toxic, phthalate-free mat or rug. 3. Class clean up Fitness studios are big on hygiene with industrial cleaning agents and sanitizing wipes between each workout. Sometimes we have to wipe down equipment ourselves, making the exposure even more direct. Not everyone shares our standards for non-toxic cleaners. You may get a side of EDC's with your class. Ask your studio to switch to non-toxic cleaners. Take steps to protect your hormones and reduce your exposure to endocrine disruptors.
