What does a slow metabolism actually mean?

Weight loss goes beyond your metabolic rate

Your metabolism plays a crucial role in your metabolic rate (MR), or total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), which is the amount of energy you expend daily. This energy comes from food, which the mitochondria, your cells’ powerhouses, break down.

A “slow metabolism” means your mitochondria burn fewer calories throughout the day – whether you’re resting or active. A “fast metabolism” is when your mitochondria burn more calories daily.

While increasing your metabolic rate can be effective for weight management, it’s not the only factor.
