When fasting, the mitochondria, the powerhouses of your cells, should be burning fat for fuel. As soon as your mitochondria shift back to burning carbs, it indicates a stress response was triggered, and your body may be breaking down muscle for energy.
For example, if you hit the 12-hour mark of your fast and measuring your metabolism reveals you’re burning fats, that’s a sign to keep going. If you measure your metabolism one hour later and it shows your mitochondria are burning carbs, you should break your fast with a nutritious meal.
