What you need to know about the impending federal hemp ban

Even if you live in a state with legal cannabis, this move is still worth paying attention to.

Last week, the bill that ended the government shutdown may have also ended federally legal hemp. It moved through Congress quickly and with little debate, leaving the industry without an opportunity to respond or for Americans who consume hemp products to have their voices heard.

For those living in a state with legal cannabis, things won't change too much. Although this development doesn’t bode well for federal legalization efforts, consumers in legal states are unlikely to feel direct impacts.

The measure aims to close the “hemp loophole” in the 2018 Farm Bill, creating a near-total prohibition that will take effect in one year, and reshape a segment of the industry that seemed to be cresting toward mainstream acceptance.
